I have a GET GIC 980R consumer unit with a knackered RCD. GET in their wisdom have discontinued this range and sold all their stock. Has anyone any idea of a compatible RCD for this board. The main difference from most other RCD's is that its fitted to the LHS of the board.
Anyone? Anything?

be careful fellas, I know its very unlikely to cause a problem but fitting and mixing different mcbs / rcds on dis. boards could be deemed as dangerous due to different levels of testing by manufacturers. NIC for example would class this as a non compliance!
By the time you've ponced about trying to get an rcd to fit you could have bought a new unit and fitted it. All the majors have '17th' edition boards + mcb deals for about 60 notes

i take ur point happy hooker but there would be a minimum standard they all have to meet wouldnt you say? i wouldnt say it would be dangerous if you dont alter dinrails, busbars or ip ratings. changing the board could add an extra £100 to the cost of a job. I know manufactures only test their own prouducts but like i said to a set standard. i suppose the main issue that could arise is the guarentee from the manufacturer of the consumer unit if a fault arised with the other manufacturers part.

That is the standard argument brother, and indeed the one that everyone would logically use. But if there was an incident involving a faulty dis board etc. you would become the responsible person as the manufacturers liability would have been removed by you fitting alternative accessories to their board. As unlikely as this sounds you never know. You could use some investigation and find out which manufacturers are suppled by or supply GET products and use an accessory from one of these as that would be acceptable. I know its a tricky call but you could be gambling a lot otherwise. As you may be aware the NIC inspectors are never wrong....!!?

I would assume (Possibly incorrectly) that the NIC inspector would have to take your electrical installation certificates as evidence of what works you under took and that any suitable replacement part would be suitable for its application. I certainly know that not every named product is made by that name. GET is certainly one make that has different product names and pattern parts. GE makes a pattern for the old Wylex boards for example. Merlin and Sq D are identical but different names. I think I would have to agree that a compatible device would be acceptable and IF my NIC inspector disagreed I would certainly ask for evidence from HIM as to why it is so. If it fits correctly and does not reduce the protection rating of the board and acts within the parameters of the reg’s then who can suggest its none compliant.

Mark, it is arguable that the c/u should be at this point updated to 17th, true or not so??

If everything been Inspected and tested and all results are satisfactory whats the problem with using any make of MCBs and RCDs.
