Hi,

After fifteen years we have decided to renovate the bathroom. To save on money I purchased everything online via a reliable company who has been around since the forties. I wanted a powerful but quite fan in the bathroom so I done my homework and found a great company in the UK, the fan itself installed in the attic and then through into the ceiling connected via insulated aluminum ducting to an adjustable air valve so there is no perspiration when drawing steam from the bathroom.

The problem I have is with the wiring because I am totally lost with this one. Let me explain the wiring for the fan itself as stipulated below. From what I can work out from the diagram below is that S1 represents Main Fuse which is basically your main cable. S3 represents a breaker i.e. pull cord of light switch.* but what I cannot work out is there is no N going through the breaker. Could somebody explain this wiring for me because I am totally lost…? Could somebody please help me out here and explain in your view the best way into wiring this because I am lost. I am astute enough to carry out most electrical work and I am competent enough to make sure I am safe and wire up correctly. But this one has got me by the :? and me is very confused, to the point of

The bit I get confused with is the diagram to me is very poorly laid out, to the point of confusion and it's the diagram which is confusing me because looking at the diagram one would think there are two wires going into the extractor fan. One is the main cable from the lighting ring, the other is looping back out to the breaker i.e. pull cord and then linking this to live from L2 and LT totally lost. :(

If you do have an idea then please list below for me what I need to do.

If you would like to look at the full diagram then please go here and view the PDF manual from the manufacturers and suppliers of the fan. http://www.fantronix.com/acatalog/tt_user.pdf

The attached image is quite small so I would advise looking at the PDF file to get a better picture.

I can understand your confusion but I think you are reading the diagram the wrong way when you say it's looping back to a breaker and pull cord to L2 and LT
Lets start from scrach with the live and neutral wired through a switch S1, the connections go direct onto the fan connections L and N.
You must then connect another live direct to L1 for min speed or L2 for max speed, or you could connect a two way switch from live to both L1 and L2 to select the required speed.
You must also connect another live via a breaker S1 to the fan connection LT, the instructions are not clear but I think LT is used to power a timer circuit built into the fan unit. The breaker S1 I guess is to protect the timer circuit from the mains as this would require a mutch lower reating than the supply to the main fan drive unit.
All the supplies are from the mains into the fan unit not looping or feeding back from the fan.
I hope this description of the connections helps.

what you have is a trickle vent fan. see page 2 "fans are double speed and designed for continuous operation". this means that the fan runs at a low speed all the time, then when you want maximum ventilation you can switch to the faster speed.
diagrams 12 & 13 show wiring for the option of either fast or slow constant running. diagram 14 shows a switch to change speeds. diagrams 16 & 17 show max and min speeds with timer control. diagram 18 shows a timer switch and a speed switch.
what is the model number of the fan?
