SEMI-QUALIFIED......................

Hi all,

Im now looking to go self employed...........

Ive been doing electrical installations (domestic and commercial) for a reputable contracting company for a few years now. I qualified as a rolling stock electrical engineer (trains) through an apprenticeship after leaving school 10 years ago. But!!! My qualifications are not recognised by anyone! I have C+G certificates for electrical maintenence and EAL certificates.

I can do the job ok, but my qualifications say I cant....

I've had training salesmen come round for interviews with me and say I have to start from scratch and pay for 6 months training at the cost of £6000!!!

My argument is that I can do the job and know the theory relatively well and just need the paperwork to prove it!

Anybody know someone who isn't out to rob so I can crack on??

Hi Simon,
To Get the qualifications yopu require to work as an electrician you will need to pass the following courses
C&G 2382-10 3day 17th Edition Course
C&G 2392-10 4 Day Fundementals in Inspection and Test
C&G 2391 5 Day Inspection and Test
After this you will need to join one of the Scheme providers(NICEIC,ECA,EAL,NAPIT)
This will cost you around £1800 for the courses and around £1000 to be part of a scheme(Membership and assessment)
You should then be Part P qualified.

Simon, George has given you sound advice but bottom line is this: to become Part P registered you need to have the relevant experience, be able to show examples of your work and be able to test a domestic property, you need no qualifications what so ever but within a year of being accepted you must undertake and pass what will be the 17th edition. The testing is fairly straight forward but like everything else easy when you know how. Registration is round the £400 mark and if you fail its another £400 the second time around, you can show the same work though. (trust me I know) Regards Jimbo

Hi Simon,
Jimbo is being a little PC on Georges advice to you I feel. "Competant Person" springs to mind and is stated in "Law" if you want to practice as an electrician.
However, to be a good electrician you need and should train so as to gain C&G qualifications is quite right.

What a load of crap, unless you want to pay out yearly through the nose. Just get the loacal council to inspect you work. £110.00 ontop of what you charge will still be cheaper to your customer that employing a NICEIC,ECA, EAL or NAPIT contractor.! :lol:
That's in my opinion of course.
