Ceiling fan confusion

Hi All, I would be eternally grateful if some-one can help me unravel this mistery.

My girlfriend bought a ceiling fan off ebay, not sure what make it is but it has a Red, Blue, Brown and earth wire. My existing ceiling rose has 3 Neutrals [Black], 4 reds [Live] and a black [switch] wire.

Is there a typical standard as to which wire should go where and if so could anyone please advise how the fan wires should be connected?

Karl, it sounds like you should have had a controller with the fan, I would try having a look round the net, wiring it direct is going to give you no speed control. Regards Jimbo

Thanks Jimbo, I think the controller is integral as the fan has a speed pull cord on the side, there is also a pull for the light and a switch for direction. The primary purpose of the light is cosmetic, and if it does end up being single speed I wouldn't mind .... how should the wires be connected? I've tried a couple of combinations, blue-N, Brown-switch, Red-L and Blue-switch, Brown-N, red-L.... things are working but in the wrong sequence, either light is on and fan only works when wall switch is off or fan works when wall switch is on but light doesn't work at all.......?

sounds like it needs a permanent feed you will need to run 3 core from the switch
