please could anyone explain contactors to me . Is there any reason an electronic time switch would cause a problem controlling a contactor switching a large fluorescent load

A contactor is an electrically controlled switch used for switching a power circuit, similar to relay except they generally have a with higher currant rating. They can be controlled via a circuit or time clock which has a much lower power level than the switched circuit.
