i dare say you guys will hate me for taking on these kinda things without having real expierence but hey i feel ive been doing alright well kind of lol

ok ive bought a house im on a very tight budget im living in it alone and plan to stay at this house.

i have changed the old consumer unit for a new one from screwfix its a wylex 10 way split load jobbie

not the old unit was wired up as follows

30 switch
cooker
upper and lower sockets

30 switch
Electric shower

15 switch
central heating water tank pump

5 switch
Groundfloor and upper Lights

on the new unit i have tried to follow the above obviously relying on a new and improved board but slightly re aranging things.

I have now put the cooker on its own 32breaker

i did try to put the upper and lower sockets on seperate breakers however i never managed so they remain on the same breaker

i also tried to do the same with the upper and lower lights but failed so now they share the same breaker

the central heating is on its own 16breaker

and the shower is on its own 32 breaker

everything works as it should at the minute however i do want to split the upper and lower lights so if one go's of they dont all trip

same with the sockets.

one other item is ive changed the light in the bathroom from a normal celing rose to a new one the original had 2 black neutral going to the bulb baynet two live going to loop in and the earths going to the earth on the rose

now fitting my new light it has a connection block consisting of four blocks
1xlive
1xearth
1xneutral
1xspare

ive tried all reds to live
all blacks to neutral
all greens to earth

it lights up fine however if it operate the switch it trips the light ring out ive checked all connections and theyr fine

any advice would be greatly appreciated also i have lost my kitchen light since changing the consumer unit

i hope i can solve the above but can i need to do it cause i cant afford a electrician

Sorry fella - your MCB is tripping off for a very good reason - and you should not be doing this, again, for a very good reason

As things stand your installation is in a dangerous condition and breaks the wiring regs in so many ways (not least the statutory Part P of the Building Regs)

I know you say you cant afford an electrician, but honestly, having to pay for cost of your house when it burns down (as your insurance will be invalid) or even the fine levied for contravention of the building regs will be considerably larger than the bill a sparks will give you for sorting it out

Dont mean to arsey about this but PLEASE pick up the phone and get someone in - sharpish!

the upper lights and lower lights are on seperate breakers now

just the kitchen light is failing ive not taken it apart ive tried new bulbs and known working ones but no joy any ideas?

Well honestly...yes we do.

Main reason being as has already been said you are putting yourself and others at risk of injury.

Did you check all your equipotential bonding was up to scratch before changing the C.U??, do you have the correct type of CU for the earthing system present at the house??

Have you carried out any tests to make sure the RCD(s) operate correctly and to ensure a good earth on all circuits??.

I would hazard a guess at no to all the above.

Dont get me wrong I'm happy to give a few pointers on minor job's to the untrained but replacing a C.U....sorry but no.

Kindest regards.
