I am putting a new 125 amp three phase socket in a service pit in the middle of an aircraft hangar. there are already services in the pit, some explosion proof, some not. should all electriacl equipment be explosion proof in a pit?

Not neccessarily
I have done a lot of work on PDC's in aircraft hangers, not many outlets were explosion proof, but we used to use the double interlock pin on the 125A BS4343's so that the contactor would only engage when the plug was fully home and would drop out if it was pulled out at all
What spec have you been given?
