Hi, I've been asked to carry out a periodic inspection and test on some rental properties, they are single occupancy house's not flats, with ground and first floor. 2 questions, the installations will obviously predate the 17th edition, will RCD protection be required for socket outlets if there is none? And would interconnected mains/battery smoke alarms to bs 5389 or whatever the BS no is be mandatory or just advisable?

Thanks

well going back to the 16th, 30mA would be needed for any sockets likely to feed equipment outdoors, other than that, virtually everything (non mechanically protected buried cables, socket outlets, bathroom circuits etc etc) will be on a '4'

Really, I would have thought 3 as it's an existing installation ( Doe's not comply with current IEE Reg's) ( this doe's not necessarily imply that the installation is unsafe) would you not agree?

I think you need to brush up on your codes a bit before doing periodics;)

Code 3 means further investigation required:cool:

As central said it would be a Code 4 ,does not meet the current wiring regs .

haha, no problems

although (for those that want to know) a '3' is not genreally acceptable for domestic premises

Sorry guys, not wishing to discourage a junior member, but really, if you have to ask such an elementary question, are you really qualified and experienced enough to sign off periodic inspections?. Remember the public liability issue - have you got trade insurance?:?:
