    Default Career as an Electrician

    17 from london.
I have decided to learn a trade and Electrician seems to always rank highly on most peoples opinion of the best trades.
I have read about and apparently the course / apprenticeship is 3 - 4 years long.

I'm fit and quite strong and hardworking.
However i'm not keen on heights but i can tolerate them .

Can you list the main pros and cons for this Career ?
    Thanks.

Not sure I can be particularly helpful but I am 43 and have just jacked my office job to train as a domestic electrical installer. All the research I did before taking the plunge points to your career choice being a good one.

It does not take so long to qualify for domestic work as you don't have to do the NVQ stuff. That's where you might find the biggest sticking point in getting work with somebody so you can accumulate the evidence for your practical portfolio. Don't let that put you off though. Go for it mate, there will never be a situation where electricians are not needed any more and it is a skilled job that householders can't really do for themselves.

    Cheers

Some of the courses offered in Britain to take up a career as an electrician include the Domestic Installation Workshop-MOD 1, City and Guilds 2377-11 PAT Testing Course, 2391-20 Certificate of Electrical Installation, 2382-12 17th Edition Course, 2391 Practical Pre Assessment Day, 2392-10 Inspection and Testing Course, the EAL Electrician Apprenticeship etc.

Go enquire about these, find out which one would suit you best and accordingly go ahead with that one!

Try and find someone your family knows to get some practical on the job training. You can't beat on the job practice, after all a class room's one thing, but some bodged light fitting like I had today is another thing.

Hi, im not an electrician, however i am in training to be one, at college. I'm currently, studying 2330 level inspection and testing. Heres what i'v learnt to those looking for insight.

When i started the maths scared the crap out of me at first. However you do learn really hard maths whilst studying and after a year of doing it it does become very easy. So don't let the math scare you, i should know i was rubbish at maths in school, now i feel like hawking.

You could train in college and go into the army with it, i heard you do 1 years training in Berlin and basically direct power to bases. On top of that you'l earn a variety of driving licenses army training and various other quals. These could make you a variety of jobs and opportunities open up.

I'm actually looking for work experience, il work for free part time around my college days mon, tues and dinner time wednesday....

For some reason a lot of employers won't respond it rather quiet annoying. Especially when your offering your services for nothing.

C&G 2330 is the Certificate in Electrotechnical Technology you have Level 2 (2 years) which gets you up to domestic installation, Level 3 includes industrial installation another year. You also have to do some practical experience to get your NVQ alongside these. I have been doing this course now for 3 months and it has a good balance between practical and theory. City and Guilds have a website take a look at it.
