Electrical Certificates - Can I issue them as a competent person?
Hi All...
New to the site and it seems very interesting...just wondering if anyone can assist?
I recently qualified as a Domestic Electrical Installer done Part P and 17th edition...
I have installed 2 minor circuits 1 socket and 1 light! can I issue a minor works certificate or do I need to call someone else in to Certifiy the work for me? I installed these in my own house and they have been fully tested using the Megger MFT 1553
Any help or clarification would be fantastic...
Thanks

You say you have recently qualified as a Domestic Installer, done Part P and the 17th edition, but are not sure whether you can issue Certificates?
What were you asleep during the courses, or did you get your mate to do them for you.
These two circuits, are they notifiable?

These circuits, are they new circuits starting at the CU, or are they extensions of existing circuits???

Re: Electrical Certificates - Can I issue them as a competent person?
Hello ohmslaw....
They are running off existing circuits,...and in reply to 'spinlondon' the course tutors are telling me that I cannot issue certs until I become a member of say NICEIC or NAPIT or register with a competent persons scheme, however, other electricians say you dont need to be registered to issue certs....others say you need to be registered...I can only go on what the experienced guys tell me, however, I get differing opinions....and I am sorry to sound so obvious, but I dont want to get myself in trouble...
Once again thanks for the help...

Re: Electrical Certificates - Can I issue them as a competent person?
There's two types of Certification.
One required by BS7671 which includes Electrical Installation and Minor Work Certificates.
The other is required by Part P and is usually known as a Building Regulations compliance notice.
EICs and MWCs can be issued by any one with the competence to carry out the Inspection and Testing.
Building Regulation compliance notices can be issued through a Competent persons, or Self Certification scheme, such as those run by the NICEIC, Napit etc.
Or by the Local Authority Building Control, after paying the appropriate notification fee.
If notification through the LABC is made, they may wish to inspect during installation, or may be satisfied with just recieving copies of an EIC/MWC at the end of the work.
I imagine your course tutors are refering to Part P when stating membership of a scheme is required.

Hello Spinlondon....
Thank you so much for that information... that has clarified matters for me... its a shame that the teachers of these courses could not answer these questions!.. one assumes if you teach a subject you would know key important information....
Again, your help has been invaluable... thank you (and as a newbie, will probably require further assistance!? ;-) )

Re: Electrical Certificates - Can I issue them as a competent person?
You should be issuing certs, and you don’t have to be registered with a competent person scheme to do so. But you should not be undertaking notifyable works without being registered, or notifying building control at least 30 days before the works start,
