help wiring a double plug socket
hi there,
I am sure this is simple, but Im having difficulty working out how to wire in a double plug socket. Heres the situation:
The wall of the room has two sockets, a single plug socket and a double plastic cover which had an extension coming out to a double plug socket. I turned off the mains and wired in the single socket ok, then when I took off the plastic cover of the double socket, instead of one set of wires coming through the metal box, it has two sets, which fed into a connector, and then another wire came out of the connector as well to the separate double socket box.
I took off the connector and wire to the double socket, which just left two sets of wires coming through the metal box in the wall. I checked the other plug socket, and that didnt work, as I assume its linked to the circuit I just unconnected.
So I now have two sets of wires (2 live, 2 neutral and 2 earth), and one double plug socket.
On the back of the double plug socket, there is one point for neutral and one point for live, and two earths.
How do I wire it?
I tried to put both live wires into the live point, but the wires are two thick to fit. Same for the neutral.
Whats the best thing to do?
Thanks for any help
Paul

So you thought you'd have a go, screwed up and now want advice?
GET AN ELECTRICIAN you obviously have no idea what you're doing.

Re: help wiring a double plug socket
Remember to fully slacken off the terminal screws on the live neutral and earth terminals, then you insert all of the live wires into the live terminal, tighten the terminal screw and test the connection for tightness, repeat this procedure with the neuteral wires, then with the earth put one of the earth wires in one of the earth terminals and tigten the terminal screw, then put the second earth wire into the second terminal and prepare a flying wire by pulling a short length of the earth conductor from some new T&E cable, put earth sleeving over it leaving both ends exposed, put one end of the flying wire into the second earth terminal then put the other end of the flying wire into the earth terminal that is on the inside of the backbox, this will ensure that the metal backbox is bonded to earth for safety.
Hope this helps
