Default Unfamiliar with this fuse box

    Hi there,

My sister just tried replacing a plug socket in her kitchen. Now the electrics in the kitchen won't work. We wanted to check the fuse box, but we're not familiar with it. We took the panel off, but can't see where to access the fuses/fuse wire. The one I have at home is a simple thing where you just replace the wire.

We just want to find out whether she's blown a fuse or screwed up the loop.

Here's a picture of the fuse box:

    Any help much appreciated.

This is a fairly modern consumer unit, but you really should not be taking off the cover. it is intended that you only have to switch the fuse back up to make everything come back on. How did your sister remove the old socket without switching off the fuse in the first place? It is possible that she has put the wiring in the incorrect positions or not tightened up the connections so when putting the socket back to the wall they have come out. Best option call a qualified, competent and registered electrician to investigate.Small cost, good resolution.

Hi, thanks for that. I thought that was how they operated but she disagreed with me. I think you must be right on contacting an electrician.
I gather when she wired the socket following instructions, switched the Mains on, turned on the plug and the kitchen circuit tripped. She took the socket back off to check the wiring and, after fiddling, an earth cable connected to the backbox came away and broke off. The earth that comes out with the Mains cables is ok. Since switching the fuse that tripped back to the "on" position, it hasn't blown again, but all electrics in the kitchen aren't working, aside from the light.

    Thanks for the assistance.

fairly modern? its about 25 years old! i have taken a few of them out because the neutral bar that is connected to the main switch melts away from housing poor design. make sure your sparky tightens the neutrals!

looks like it could do with a good hoover out as well to get rid of the dust that is in there.
