Shower extractor fan replacement
Due to the shower extractor fan malfunctioning I bought a replacement and tried to fit the new fan.
The old fan which had a timer built in and activated when the bathroom light was turned on, via string pull. The timer kicked in when the light was turned off.
The new fan is a basic Marley model with no timer. When I removed the old fan I noticed it used three of the four wires available;
Brown - Live
Blue/ Grey - neutral
Black - Switch Live
Yellow/ Green - earth. (Not used)
Upon opening the back panel on the new fan, only two wires are required; permanent live and neutral. I wired the live and neutral wires then reinstated the mains supply to the unit. The fan activated and remained on. I then removed the live and replaced it with the switch live. The fan stayed off until the bathroom light was turned on, which is the intended operation.
My question now is: What do I do with the live wire? Is it safe to leave open within the unit?

Re: Shower extractor fan replacement
Hi,
Firstly, according to building regs, fans in bathrooms are supposed to have an overun timer to extract air for a set period of time after the lights are turned off. But then again, most building inspectors ive met don't give a f**k anyway.
Getting back to your original question, all i have ever done with unused wires in the back of equipment is to put a connector block on it so there is none of the conductor showing if anyone takes the fan to pieces in the future.
Hope this helps.
