Generator backup, emergency lighting
I am an apprentice working with a large electrical installation contractor in London. The emergecy lighting is fed from a separate distribution board to the normal lighting. All area have their normal lighting fed from from 2 different distribution boards with no local circuit failure protection. The emergency lighting is only energised under a mains failure. The back up generator only supplies the essencial services which is only half of the local lighting boards.
My question is under generator supply the building is open to the public but there is no protection against local circuit failure and the em ligting is not activated as this backed up by the generator, is this design correct?

Re: Generator backup, emergency lighting
Hello
maintained emergency lighting is illuminated all the time and switches over to batteries in the event of a power failure
non maintained emergency lights should be illuminated when the lighting circuits go off for any reason
I would say if any area can be left in darkness due to the lighting circuit going off then its not acceptable

Re: Generator backup, emergency lighting
Hi, thank you for your answer, the company has many retail outlets and I am told that they are all wired in this way with no local circuit protection when running on generator. What should I do now as my peers are not interested!

Re: Generator backup, emergency lighting
Are you being asked to do a report on the installation if so and you feel something is wrong then state it on the report dont be forced into signing a legal document that your not happy with
If there is a fire and the lights fail and its proved that the lights going out caused a death its the one who signed the report who ends up in court this is health and safety and its YOUR HONOUR from the box so cover your own back.

Re: Generator backup, emergency lighting
As you say your an apprentice you should be working with a qualified supervisor who is the duty holder so point it out to that person who should advise the responsible person in writing
