What is the difference between a RCD and a RCBO?

Re: warrener
Hi.
The main difference between an RCD and an RCBO is that an RCBO provides overload protection aswell as fault protection.
RCBO's are also known as MCB/RCD units i.e it's basically an MCB with an RCD stuck to it.
RCD's do not provide overload protection only fault protection.

Re: warrener
another way to look at it is that the term 'RCD' is just a generic residual current device, and is more of a principle/concept rather than an actual component
An RCBO (as already said) is an RCD with integral overload protection
An RCCB (residual current circuit breaker) is an RCd and circuit breaker combined - this is what you find in a split load board, and as said, will only trip off on earth fault current, not on overload or short circuit conditions
